Designing your dream wedding requires plenty of planning. While thinking about flower arrangements and color schemes, remember to consider what you’ll bring down the aisle. The old saying recommends selecting something borrowed, blue, old and new. Get inspired with fresh ideas to fulfill the tradition, regardless of your style.

Choose Something Old

Bringing something old to your wedding honors the past. Depending on your selection, you can use it as a chance to celebrate those who came before you.

1. A Vintage Shrug

Check local thrift stores for vintage shrugs or bridal wraps. For a winter wedding or outdoor ceremony, chances are you’ll need something to keep you warm. It will be the perfect finishing touch to your bridal look.

2. An Old Photograph

If your family has a collection of photos from previous decades, ask if you can tuck one inside your bouquet. You’ll carry a loved one down the aisle or a memory from your childhood that makes you feel cherished.

3. An Antique Vase

Vintage pottery makes an excellent altar decoration because it can serve as a place to put your bouquet when you reach your partner. Visit pottery shops, flea markets and thrift stores to see what you can find. Look for marks indicating the year underneath each vase to verify its age.

Find Something New

You likely won’t have problems finding something new for your ceremony. There are endless ways to express your style while walking down the aisle.

1. Your Lipstick Shade

While you may have a favorite everyday lipstick, choosing a new shade for your wedding can make you feel extra special. Ask your makeup artist for recommendations, and be sure to purchase a tube so you can wear it again each year on your anniversary.

2. A Stylish Veil

Choosing a veil can sometimes be an afterthought when you’re wedding dress shopping, but the right one can really perfect your vision. Don’t be afraid to try out unique styles or details that make the veil feel modern and stylish.

3. Your Wedding Shoes

Most of your wedding attire will likely be new, but you can also be intentional when shopping for your bridal shoes. You may try a new style or buy from a designer brand you’ve always wanted to own. Like the veil, the right shoes can take your look to the next level.

Remember Something Borrowed

Bringing something borrowed to the ceremony represents having someone’s blessing. Consider your closest friends and family members as candidates for this part of the popular wedding tradition.

1. A $2 Bill

A $2 bill may seem silly, but that’s what makes it fun. Someone you love might have one lying around, so ask if you can borrow it for your ceremony. It can represent good fortune as you enter your marriage.

2. A Friend’s Floral Arrangement

If you have a friend or family member getting married before you, ask them to save part of their bouquet or a flower arrangement from their venue. Fresh flowers will only stay fresh for so long, so they would need to be from a recent ceremony. However, faux flowers last forever, so you can see if anyone you know still has some from their past wedding.

3. Decorative Hair Pins

Many people need hair pins when they walk down the aisle. Even if you wear your hair down, you’ll need pins to hold your veil or other accessories. See if your loved ones have pins with decorative pearls or gems. After using them as an accessory from one of your favorite people, you can return them.

Include Something Blue

Blue represents things like love and trust in a wedding ceremony, likely because it corresponds to positive emotions. No matter what it means to you, you can add blue to your ceremony with these creative ideas.

1. Blue Toenail Polish

If you wear closed-toed shoes for your walk down the aisle, paint your toenails blue. No one will notice if the color doesn’t match your theme. You could also make this work if you wear a floor-length gown with open-toed shoes all night. If blue is one of your wedding colors, you can rock it with open-toed shoes, as well.

2. Blue Calligraphy Inside Your Bouquet

Ask a loved one to write a sweet, short note in the weeks before your big day. Copy their words in blue calligraphy by hiring a local artist or doing it yourself. Tuck the note into your bouquet to carry the secret message down the aisle in colorful ink that fulfills this tradition.

3. Blue Bridal Garter

Garters are a long-held wedding tradition. While garter tosses are mostly out of style, you can still wear one to incorporate your something blue. Similarly, you could choose bridal lingerie with blue embroidery or details.

Get Ready for Your Big Day

Finding old, new, borrowed and blue things can be a fun way to spend time before your big day. Work with loved ones to choose mementos that feel extra special. You’ll make your walk down the aisle more meaningful and complete the tradition, bringing good luck to your marriage.
